Tener un autom\u00f3vil era un sue\u00f1o que muchos no pod\u00edan costear. Sin embargo, la gente ten\u00eda la necesidad de un medio de transporte que fuera econ\u00f3mico y para recorrer distancias cortas. Fue entonces cuando empezaron a ser producidos los micro coches. Se trataba de unos autos de tama\u00f1o notablemente reducido que empezaron a salir de varias f\u00e1bricas tales como\u00a0Spatz, Gnom, Frisky, Janus, Goliath y Penguin, entre otras. El fen\u00f3meno fue mucho m\u00e1s notable en Alemania con aquellas f\u00e1bricas que empezaron a fabricar micro coches dada la prohibici\u00f3n frente a la producci\u00f3n de aviones. Para BMW ya era evidente que sus grandes y potentes motores no ten\u00edan cabida en la nueva tendencia del mercado. Fue entonces en la d\u00e9cada de los 50, viendo la gran popularidad que hab\u00edan adquirido los autos peque\u00f1os, que la empresa se interes\u00f3 por el proyecto de <em>Iso Motor Italia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Iso<\/em> era una empresa milanesa manejada por el se\u00f1or Renzo Rivolta. Hab\u00eda iniciado con la fabricaci\u00f3n de frigor\u00edficos para luego enfocarse en los esc\u00e1neres y utilitarios de tres ruedas. Fue en el a\u00f1o 1953 que <em>Iso <\/em>empez\u00f3 a fabricar el micro coche que dar\u00eda a conocer BMW. Se trataba del Isetta: un auto con forma de burbuja que med\u00eda 2.260 mil\u00edmetros de largo. Ten\u00eda una \u00fanica puerta que estaba ubicada en la parte frontal del coche, donde se ubicaba la parte superior de la columna de la direcci\u00f3n. Al abrir la puerta la columna se articulaba de tal forma que permit\u00eda el ingreso del pasajero. La suspensi\u00f3n de las ruedas delanteras era completamente independiente. Las ruedas traseras eran separadas por una distancia de 610 mil\u00edmetros, por lo que el auto no necesitaba diferencial. En cuanto al motor, \u00e9ste era bicil\u00edndrico de dos tiempos y estaba ubicado en la parte trasera del Isetta. \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Eberhard Wolf, de BMW, lleg\u00f3 a un acuerdo con Renzo Rivolta para que la empresa b\u00e1vara pudiera adquirir el nombre y las herramientas b\u00e1sicas para producir la carrocer\u00eda. Ya con los derechos para fabricar el Isetta, BMW le realiz\u00f3 ciertos cambios al coche. Se le instal\u00f3 un motor monocil\u00edndrico de cuatro tiempos tomado de la motocicleta R25. Se trataba de un motor de 247 cent\u00edmetros c\u00fabicos. El auto, que pod\u00eda alcanzar los 85 kil\u00f3metros por hora y gastaba 3.8L\/100km, fue presentado en el a\u00f1o 1955 en el Sal\u00f3n de Frankfurt. Su precio era 30% menor que el del Volkswagen m\u00e1s econ\u00f3mico del momento (2.500 marcos alemanes) por lo que tuvo gran \u00e9xito. El Isetta fue el segundo auto producido por BMW despu\u00e9s de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (el primero fue el BMW 501) y lleg\u00f3 a posicionar la empresa entre los cuatro mayores fabricantes de coches.<\/p>\n<p>En el a\u00f1o 1956 fue lanzado el Isetta 300. Esta nueva versi\u00f3n ven\u00eda equipada con un motor de 297 cent\u00edmetros c\u00fabicos y unas ventanas laterales de mayor tama\u00f1o. El \u00e9xito de los coches peque\u00f1os era indudable y segu\u00eda creciendo. En ese mismo a\u00f1o ocurri\u00f3 la crisis de Suez que provoc\u00f3 una gran escasez de petr\u00f3leo en Europa. Era otra raz\u00f3n para que la gente se mantuviera enfocada en los micro coches. Sin embargo, era evidente que el \u00e9xito del Isetta desaparecer\u00eda cuando los clientes pudieran costear algo mejor. En la f\u00e1brica decidieron que deb\u00edan empezar a producir un veh\u00edculo cuyas caracter\u00edsticas lo ubicaran entre el Isetta y los poderosos y lujosos V8. Crear un auto completamente nuevo no era una opci\u00f3n ya que no exist\u00eda el dinero suficiente para hacerlo. Era una apuesta arriesgada ya que se trataba de una versi\u00f3n ampliada del chasis.
