Al d\u00eda siguiente, sin pensarlo, decid\u00ed coger un bus destartalado que me llevar\u00eda a la Librer\u00eda Francesa, en el centro de Bogot\u00e1. Ten\u00eda que ojear las p\u00e1ginas de las revistas de carros que all\u00ed llegaban del extranjero, y se exhib\u00edan en sus estantes. Para mi sorpresa no encontr\u00e9 nada al respecto. Pasaron 1 o 2 meses hasta que por fin lleg\u00f3 la edici\u00f3n de la revista francesa \u201cSport auto\u201d con la rese\u00f1a del nuevo BMW M3 E30.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">El art\u00edculo se exced\u00eda en elogios. La agilidad y ligereza de su chas\u00eds, la precisi\u00f3n de su direcci\u00f3n, la firmeza de su frenada, la potencia de su motor de 200 caballos, una barbaridad para su \u00e9poca, y que con el tiempo evolucionar\u00eda en potencia y cilindrada hasta la versi\u00f3n de 235 caballos y 2.5 litros. Me sorprendi\u00f3 que todos los art\u00edculos sobre el M3 escritos por las plumas m\u00e1s reconocidas de estas publicaciones especializadas, coincid\u00edan en esto, incluso las brit\u00e1nicas que no se ruborizan cuando opinan lo contario a los dem\u00e1s. Como buen lector, algo me llamaba la atenci\u00f3n en ellas. Y es que Rosche es el padre de algunos de los motores m\u00e1s recordados y exitosos de BMW, comenzando por el formidable cuatro cilindros turbo de 1.5 litros y casi 1.400 caballos de potencia con el que el brasile\u00f1o Nelson Piquet, a bordo del Brabham BT52 gan\u00f3 el t\u00edtulo de la F\u00f3rmula 1 en 1983; y qu\u00e9 tal el V12 de 6 litros que montaba el incre\u00edble McLaren F1 del dise\u00f1ador ingl\u00e9s Gordon Murray, o el imbatible 4 cilindros de 2 litros que domin\u00f3 la F\u00f3rmula 2 europea de la \u00e9poca con m\u00e1s de 150 victorias y seis BMW hab\u00eda decidido producir un nuevo deportivo que competir\u00eda en el campeonato mundial de turismos, para lo cual era necesario fabricar en serie una determinada cantidad de unidades de ese modelo para poderlo homologar y as\u00ed entrar a la competici\u00f3n.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">El proyecto se desarroll\u00f3 en completo secreto, casi en forma paralela con el del Mercedes 190E 2.3 16 de la competencia. Aunque mucho se ha escrito sobre este tema y algunos aseguran que el M3 es la respuesta de BMW a su rival, la verdad es que Mercedes Benz se les adelant\u00f3. BMW ya trabajaba en este proyecto desde mediados de lo 70s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Rosche y su equipo estaban convencidos que el desarrollo del nuevo motor ir\u00eda montado sobre la carrocer\u00eda de un E21. Sin embargo, repentinamente recibieron en su cuartel, la inusual vista del director de ventas y miembro de Junta Directiva de la Compa\u00f1\u00eda, Hans-Erdmann Schonbeck con la noticia y los bocetos del nuevo modelo para el cual trabajar\u00edan y desarrollar\u00edan la nueva unidad de potencia. Mucho se debati\u00f3 si la base ser\u00eda trabajar sobre algunos de los bloques de 6 cilindros de la marca o sobre el de 4 cilindros. La Junta Directiva de BMW puso una premisa: el motor ante todo, deb\u00eda ser fiable, al fin y al cabo lo iban a montar sobre un auto de serie. Ante esto, Rosche fue enf\u00e1tico en que deber\u00edan utilizar el bloque de 4 cilindros, no solo por ahorra peso, sino porque ya hab\u00edan experimentado problemas de fiabilidad y vibraciones con el \u00e1rbol de levas de los 6 cilindros cuando llegaban a su par m\u00e1ximo de potencia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Solucionado el tema del bloque, ven\u00eda el de la culata. En lugar de partir de cero, Werner Frohwein, sabiendo que ya ten\u00edan una culata de cuatro v\u00e1lvulas por cilindro muy eficiente que equipaba el motor M88 de 6 cilindros del M1, propuso una soluci\u00f3n relativamente f\u00e1cil, recortarle 2 cilindros a la existente, ya que la mayor\u00eda de los ductos de refrigeraci\u00f3n coincid\u00edan con los del bloque de 4 cilindros, una idea brillante en ese momento, porque ambas piezas ya exist\u00edan y evitar\u00edan p\u00e9rdida de tiempo con el desarrollo y fabricaci\u00f3n de unas nuevas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Es tan especial y tecnol\u00f3gico para su \u00e9poca este motor, que el sistema de alimentaci\u00f3n de inyecci\u00f3n result\u00f3 desde todo punto de vista innovador, junto con una central de gesti\u00f3n digital de la electr\u00f3nica, producto de las ideas t\u00e9cnicas con las que lleg\u00f3 a la compa\u00f1\u00eda Helmut Himmel, un joven ingeniero reci\u00e9n graduado de la universidad, que mas tarde ser\u00eda nombrado director de la divisi\u00f3n de motores \u201cM\u201d.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Resultado: uno de los motores m\u00e1s incre\u00edbles construidos por BMW, no s\u00f3lo por su alta tecnolog\u00eda e innovaciones, su capacidad para comerse el tac\u00f3metro, si no a su baj\u00edsimo peso, fundamental para las cualidades din\u00e1micas de un deportivo. Algunas veces el chas\u00eds es soberbio, pero el motor no ayuda, o al contrario, el motor brilla y el chas\u00eds decepciona. Por eso en el M3 de primera generaci\u00f3n el chas\u00eds y el motor confirman que s\u00ed hay matrimonio perfecto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Entonces, si alg\u00fan d\u00eda tienen el placer de manejar uno -cosa dif\u00edcil estos d\u00edas-, no por causa de Covid-19, sino porque la mayor\u00eda de sus due\u00f1os por temor a usarlos y al astron\u00f3mico valor comercial que han adquirido, prefieren mantenerlos guardados y recogiendo polvo\u2026 qu\u00e9 desperdicio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Sin embargo, si alguno de ellos se los permite, as\u00ed sea desde el asiento del acompa\u00f1ante, sin duda ser\u00e1 testigo de las cualidades din\u00e1micas del carro, as\u00ed vaya sentado en dicha silla. Pero le garantizo, sin temor a equivocarme, que jam\u00e1s se le olvidar\u00e1 el sonido de este motor cuando alcance su par m\u00e1ximo de potencia.
