Cuatro a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, compiti\u00f3 en una carrera que transform\u00f3 el BMW 328 en una leyenda del deporte motor. Dos hombres corrieron hacia un triunfo espectacular. Dos a\u00f1os despu\u00e9s, BMW apunt\u00f3 a la victoria general (en 1939, la competencia fue suspendida). Tres Roadster y dos versiones cerradas del BMW 328 participaron en la carrera. El BMW 328 Coup\u00e9 hab\u00eda sido dise\u00f1ado con una carrocer\u00eda aerodin\u00e1mica por el especialista carrocero italiano Touring. Los j\u00f3venes conductores von Hanstein y B\u00e4umer fueron nominados como conductores. Ambos hab\u00edan comenzado sus carreras como pilotos de motocicletas y, a principios de la d\u00e9cada de 1930, ambos hab\u00edan logrado \u00e9xitos iniciales con los modelos BMW en las carreras de autom\u00f3viles. B\u00e4umer ya hab\u00eda tenido \u00e9xito al conducir el BMW 3\/15 PS DA 3 \u00abType Wartburg\u00bb, y en 1938 von Hanstein se convirti\u00f3 en el campe\u00f3n del gran premio alem\u00e1n de autom\u00f3viles deportivos \u201cHillclimb\u201d con el BMW 328. Pero despu\u00e9s de s\u00f3lo siete vueltas, el BMW 328 Kamm Coup\u00e9 tuvo que retirarse de la carrera por problemas t\u00e9cnicos. Ahora depend\u00eda de von Hanstein y B\u00e4umer asegurar el \u00e9xito de BMW. Su Coup\u00e9 Touring devor\u00f3 las millas y continu\u00f3 expandiendo su liderazgo sobre los competidores italianos que hab\u00edan logrado muchas victorias en la pista. S\u00f3lo la estrategia en la cabina les dio a los jefes del equipo un verdadero dolor de cabeza. Fritz Huschke von Hanstein estaba tan obsesionado con la victoria que continuamente adelant\u00f3 el cambio de pilotos respecto a lo que hab\u00edan acordado. Y B\u00e4umer pronto descubri\u00f3 que era extremadamente dif\u00edcil reprimir su impaciencia. La direcci\u00f3n del equipo le orden\u00f3 permanecer en el asiento del pasajero. Poco antes de la l\u00ednea de meta, los pilotos emprendieron una maniobra que dej\u00f3 sin aliento a los espectadores. Von Hanstein detuvo el BMW 328, y B\u00e4umer se hizo cargo del volante. Sin duda, hubo tiempo suficiente para este cambio tard\u00edo de pilotos. Cuando B\u00e4umer cruz\u00f3 la l\u00ednea de meta, el BMW 328 Touring Coup\u00e9 ten\u00eda una ventaja de un cuarto de hora sobre el veh\u00edculo que ocupaba el segundo lugar.
